The massive three pyramids were built over the period of three great rulers of Egypt namely, Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure. The Great Sphinx is also situated in the Giza Plateau. It is a pharaoh-headed statue. Adventure seekers can try out the camel ride or skydiving above the Giza plateau to get a top view of the pyramids. Do not miss out the valley temple located near the Sphinx and the sound and light show.

The opening and closing timing of the Giza pyramids might vary subject to the season. It is open on all days from 6.00 AM to 4.00 PM. Besides the entry fee, there are additional fees for the solar boat museum, sound and light show and for entering inside the pyramids.

The Egyptian Museum

Cairo is home to one of the largest and significant museums in Egypt. The Egyptian Museum has the largest and unique collection of antiquities. The museum is situated in Tahrir Square, Cairo and it has over 170000 artifacts. The highlights of the museum are countless, yet a noteworthy mention goes to the Mask of Tutankhamun displayed in a dark room (room 3) on the upper floor. Al-Azhar Mosque

The ancient Al-Azhar Mosque exhibits the brilliance of Islamic architecture and culture. The history of the Al-Azhar dates back to 970 AD. It was built by Jawhar al-Siqilli with the purpose of expanding or spreading Isma'ili Shi'a Islam. The mosque was later converted into an educational institute. The mosque has five minarets, a prayer room or hall (which can accommodate over 20,000 people), a courtyard (with fountains and mosaics), a mihrab (marble central court), etc. Avoid wearing jeans, revealing clothes or tight-fit pants instead prefer wearing loose-fit dresses, maxis or long skirts. Dress modestly and women should carry a scarf to cover their head.

The mosque is open to visitors from 8.00 AM to 4.00 PM, however the hours might vary. Visiting the mosque is completely free of cost. Remember to remove the shoes before entering the mosque. It only takes 1-2 hours to explore the mosque. Avoid visiting during the prayer timings.

Bab Zuweila

Khan el-Khalili

The best place to shop around Old Cairo is the Khan el-Khalili bazaar. The history of the Khan el-Khalili market traces back to the 14th century. It was initially built for the use of merchants and their goods. Later during the 15th century, it turned into a trade centre. The marketplace reflects medieval Islamic architecture. The metal lamps and patterned lanterns light up the whole marketplace and make it vibrant. One of the unique things to buy in the market is the inlaid wooden jewellery boxes, traditional glass wares, wall plates, and leather products. The market has various shops that sell Egyptian figurines which is the best option for souvenirs.  

The market does not have a fixed timing, however most shops are open from 9.00 AM to 11.00 PM. Some shops in the market might be closed on Friday mornings for weekly prayer. The market is mostly crowded at night and on weekends. Try the street foods and drinks in the market.

Al-Azhar Park

The perfect spot to spend a calm time with nature is to visit the Al-Azhar Park. It is the largest public park in Cairo. The Al-Azhar Park is home to over millions of trees and plants with beautiful walkways. The park has a dedicated play area with nature views for kids, which makes it the best place for family bonding time. Visitors will be amazed by the Al-Azhar Park’s Islamic architectural style. The highlight of the park is the geometric al-Azhar Garden. The cultural centre and museum at the park offer fascinating information into Egyptian history and tradition. Visit the park during the springtime, because it is the flower-blooming season and less crowded.

The park is open every day between 9.00 AM to 10.00 PM and the entry fee cost is around 10 EGP (Egyptian pounds). Citadel of Saladin

The Islamic historic citadel is a medieval fort built during the 12th century. It is an important ancient fort that has stood for over 700 years. Reaching the Citadel of Saladin from Downtown Cairo only takes 20-25 minutes. It was built in 1176 by the great sultan of Egypt, Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi. The citadel has defensive towers and it is surrounded by walls of three different heights. The Gawhara Palace or the Palace of Jewels inside the citadel exhibits the jewellery, costume of the sultan, furniture, throne of Mohammed Ali, etc. The Military and Police Museum is a must-visit spot, it treasures the history and exhibits the objects from different periods.

Visitors can explore the Citadel of Saladin on any day and it is open from 8.00 AM to 5.00 PM. The entry ticket differs for adults and students. Dress modestly and never forget to bring a scarf because women are mandated to cover their head with a scarf while visiting the mosques.
